LA RIOJA TOUR

We take you on an unforgettable journey through one of the world’s most captivating wine regions. Here, centuries of rich tradition, stunning natural beauty, and a deep passion for living well converge. As we pedal through this vibrant landscape, we’ll explore the ideal balance of scenic riding, rich history, world-class gastronomy, and the warm camaraderie that defines every route we take.

Our journey will trace the winding paths of the Ebro River, carrying us through the rolling vineyard terraces of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. Sheltered by the dramatic peaks of the Sierra de Cantabria to the north and the majestic Sierra de la Demanda to the south, these quiet backroads connect charming medieval hilltop towns like Laguardia, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and Haro.

Along the way, we’ll ride by historic sections of el Camino de Santiago, pass centuries-old Romanesque monasteries, and marvel at the contrast between ancient stone villages and avant-garde winery architecture. This visual harmony is perfectly captured by the Ysios Winery, designed by the renowned Spanish/Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava, and the Marqués de Riscal Hotel and Winery, crafted by the
world-famous Frank Gehry.

The terrain here is a cyclist’s dream: gliding through smooth river valleys, tackling punchy climbs up to fortified villages, or enjoying the option to test our legs on the legendary mountain passes of Valdezcaray and Alto de Moncalvillo, where the professional peloton of the Vuelta a España has made history. After our time in the saddle, we will refuel as the locals do—savoring regional culinary specialties and, of course, raising a glass of Tempranillo.

As always, our goal is to share the authentic soul of the region with you: our favorite hidden roads, local traditions, and secret spots off the beaten path. We look forward to riding together, making new friends, and creating a new chapter of incredible memories in La Rioja.

The Week

We’ve crossed Spain from east to west more times than we can count, always passing through La Rioja en route to the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias. Every time, the region teased us: endless seas of vineyards, mind-boggling winery architecture, and world-famous names like Marqués de Riscal, López de Heredia, Roda and Muga.

We begin our journey exploring Rioja Alta and la Sierra de Cantabria, where the road ascends quickly to reward us with unforgettable, panoramic views of the wine valley. The tour gives us the flexibility to shift our base across two or three handpicked hotels, ensuring you experience a true variety in landscapes.

As we ride, our path crosses El Camino de Santiago (The Way) multiple times and to uncover the cradle of the Spanish and Basque languages at the monasteries of San Millán de la Cogolla.

Continuing through stunning medieval stone villages, we eventually arrive in Haro, the wine capital of La Rioja. Here, we will spend our last nights in the city center. We´ll take one last ride to say goodbye, riding through vineyards and up to the Sierra de Cantabria!
